A4 Paper – Which Weight is Best?

a4 paper

Whether you have an important project coming up or you work in an office that needs printing paper to be on hand at all times, you’ll likely be faced with the very confusing concept of buying the right printing paper.

A4 paper is something that most people come into contact with regularly throughout their working lives. However, if you haven’t been the one in charge of buying it, you’ll be surprised to learn that there are many different things you need to consider before buying it.

One of the considerations you need to keep in mind with paper is its weight. Fortunately, A4 paper comes in a few different weight and thickness options, providing you with a wide variety to choose from. Here’s a breakdown of the various weights you can get A4 paper in to help you decide which type is best for your needs.

Laser A4 Paper

Laser A4 paper is a perfect option for anybody who’s looking for printing paper that’s durable and heat resistant. This resistance allows it to withstand the heat of certain printers, making it suitable for bigger print jobs. Its high-quality thickness also means that it doesn’t crease or bend easily. It’s a good pick for school projects, sophisticated documents and everyday office documents.

Light to Standard A4 Paper Weights

Lightweight printing paper sits somewhere between 70-90 GSM (Grams per Square Metre).

Generally, this is your go-to A4 paper for everyday printing and low scale projects. It’s the paper you often see sitting in home printers or office machines. It’s recommended that you use paper above 70 GSM for printers. Anything under this can jam easily and cause problems with your printer.

It’s important to note that, in general, the cheaper the paper, the worse the quality will be. So when you’re shopping around for lightweight A4 paper, remember that a lower price will likely mean the paper is thinner. You’ll also want to make sure you buy paper from a reputable brand such as Canon, HP or Epson.

Medium A4 Paper Weights

Medium weight paper is generally between 90-160 GSM, which is considerably thicker than lightweight paper.

Medium weight paper is a great option for items such as posters, flyers and brochures. It also allows for double sided printing without any see-through qualities. Medium weight paper is a good option for anybody looking for thick, crisp and smooth quality in their printing. While it isn’t recommended for daily use because of its thickness, it’s an ideal option for anything a little more important. For example, presentations will look extremely professional when printed on this weight of A4 paper.

Heavy A4 Paper Weights

Heavier weight paper can go beyond 300 GSM and is no longer regarded as ordinary printing paper.

Heavy weight A4 paper produces durable prints and clean finishes for very important projects. This type of thickness is what you often see when you look at folder dividers, manila folders and business cards. Invitations can also be printed in a GSM as high as 400 GSM, which often can’t be printed using a standard home or office printer.
